movies part 15: american splendor

i watched this on sunday night with ariel. it's the story of harvey pekar, an ordinary everyman file clerk who turns his life into comics. calling harvey an everyman is a compliment; he's got a shit life. he's short and pudgy, his voice is gone, and he can barely draw stick figures. but he takes all the mundane, shitty things in his life and hires illustrators to turn them into a comic. and he finds love, of a sort.

i liked it. the movie was slow, and depressing. not that much happens. but watching him on dave letterman on nbc was funny. listening to his nerd friend talk was funny. some of the shit that happens to him is funny. it's worth watching, at least once. i don't know what would make me see it again, though.
