fever pitch

was on demand, and seeing as i loved 50 first dates so much, i figured another drew barrymore date movie was worth seeing at least the first 10 minutes. i ended up really liking it. the style of it was kind of strange, and i was trying to figure it out. it intrigued me enough that i might look it up later, at least that's what i was thinking at the time, until the credits rolled, at which point i received three surprises.

directed by the farrelly brothers? what? i did not think this was their cup of tea.

based on the novel "fever pitch" by nick hornby. oh right, i had heard something about this back when the movie first came out. at the time i had dismissed it as a red sox fan movie. i've read everything by nick hornby that's out, i think, and i've liked the other two screenplay adaptations, so if i had known this ahead of time, i definitely would have watched it. which i did anyways, so i guess it all worked out. funnily enough, fever pitch is about football, or soccer as we call it, and turning it into a baseball movie adds another, if simplistic, entendre.

ione sky? whoa. i did not know she was still, you know, existing. she was one of drew's friends or sisters, not sure which. another surprise, which is really surprise 3b i suppose, is that she was the reverend's wife (anne's mother) in arrested development.
